My sudden meet with Sachin Tendulkar, thanks to team Australia: Birthday Special

The dream of every cricket fan not just in India but also outside is to meet the great Sachin Tendulkar at least once. More so if you have grown up parallel to his career in the 90s, like I have. My first and only meet (so far) with Tendulkar happened on September 30, 2004 but it was completely unplanned.

The Australian team had arrived in India for their test and ODI tour in 2004. They were supposed to play a practice game against Mumbai at the Brabourne Stadium aka The Cricket Club of India (CCI) from October 2 onwards. Hence, they had their practice session on September 30 at the same place. My friend Ashish Desai’s uncle Mr Sanjay Samant happens to be the member of the CCI. It was through him that we were supposed to get a chance to meet the Australian team during their practice.

Both of us reached CCI much before time, such was our excitement to see the likes of Shane Warne, Ricky Ponting, Adam Gilchrist, Glenn McGrath, Matthew Hayden, Jason Gillespie, Michael Clarke, etc, in person. There was still an hour before Ashish’s uncle would reach the venue. So what do we do till then?

Ashish suggested that we try and see if we can enter without any ID card. As per his plan, we should walk with such confidence that nobody should doubt that we are not the members of the CCI. We did that while walking with a lot of attitude (50 rupya kaat overacting ka) and went past the security personnel. The plan worked. Nobody stopped us and within a minute we were standing right near the Australian team! At that time, it looked like an achievement. Today it feels like security lapse.

Anyways, we were left awestruck while looking at these iconic Australian cricket stars practicing, exercising and cracking jokes at a distance of just a foot. Our next step was to see if we can get an autograph of any of the cricketers. Mobile phones with camera weren’t a regular thing 19 years ago.

We saw Michael Kasprowicz happily signing autographs. I approached him but just before my turn, he said he needs to go and will be back later. I was left disappointed. I focussed again on the batting of the Australian team in the nets.

Just when I was wondering which Australian cricketer should I approach next, a car zoomed in to the CCI and out came Sachin Tendulkar! Here he was, unannounced and we were shocked, in a good way. Our legs automatically ran towards him. Despite the crowd charging towards him, Sachin was calm. Surprisingly, the crowd behaviour wasn’t as wild as I had expected it to be when he arrived.

Much to our joy, Sachin happily and patiently gave autographs to each one of us. Some of those youngsters started having some light conversation with Sachin and he shyly answered to a few of them. He had opened the dickey of his car to keep back his cricket kit. While he was about to shut the same, he, along with Ashish, asked all of us to get back to ensure we don’t get hurt. I was surprised that his voice didn’t sound like how those mimicry artists make it sound. While this was happening, we completely forgot about the Australian team.

When I had left home in the morning, I had no idea what the day had in store for us. But Sachin wasn’t the only one who made my day. After Sachin left and the euphoria was over, an Australian gentleman came towards me and said, “You wanted my autograph, right?” It was Michael Kasprowicz keeping his word.

India lost the test series but the fourth match in Mumbai, which happened around a month later, turned out to be a memorable affair. Read more about that match HERE.

Only time Tendulkar was NOT selected in team India, neither injured nor rested

Throughout his career spanning 24 years, Sachin Tendulkar never went out of form. There was never a time when his spot in the team was in danger due to non-performance. This is one of the major reasons why he is considered a legend.

But there was one occasion when he wasn’t selected in the team for a series against Pakistan. And this wasn’t because of any injury or with the intention of giving him rest.

The month of September in mid and late 1990s brought the excitement of the Sahara Cup, a five match India-Pakistan ODI series in Toronto, Canada. The Toronto Cricket Skating and Curling Club used to be thronged by supporters from both countries that were treated to some quality cricket.

Circa September 1998, the Indian cricket fans were gearing up for another India v/s Pakistan series. But they were in for some disappointment this time around as Tendulkar wasn’t included in the squad for the Sahara Cup.

It so happened that the Commonwealth Games [CWG] clashed that year with the Sahara Cup. Cricket was included in the CWG for the first time during that edition [it hasn’t happened after that] which was played at Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia.

As many as 16 teams participated to achieve cricket glory. The format was very much like the World Cup. There were four groups of four teams with one team from each group going into the semi-finals. Instead of one West Indies team, the series saw Jamaica, Antigua-Barbuda and Barbados play separately.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India [BCCI] were about to send a second string team for the Commonwealth Games, just like how Pakistan did. However, Suresh Kalmadi [guilty of corruption in the infamous 2010 CWG Scam] who was the President of the Indian Olympics Association then, put tremendous pressure on the BCCI to send a strong India team to the CWG.

After a lot of negotiations, it was decided that India’s main squad will be divided into two for Sahara Cup and Commonwealth Games. As it happened, Sachin Tendulkar was selected to play at the CWG along with other big names like Anil Kumble, Ajay Jadeja, Robin Singh and Harbhajan Singh.

Unfortunately, India couldn’t reach the semi-final stage as they won only one match out of the three against Canada with their match against Antigua-Barbuda being a no result due to the rains. India lost to Australia by being all out for just 109 while chasing a total of 256. [See all results of that year’s CWG HERE]

Meanwhile, by the time India were out of the CWG, they had lost the Sahara Cup too in the first four ODIs itself [see all results HERE]. But despite that, Tendulkar was sent to Toronto to play the last ODI. He scored an impressive 77 but India lost the match after Pakistan easily chased their total of 256.

Cricket will be returning to the next edition of the Commonwealth Games in 2022 in the form of Women’s T20.

Final Slap For The Critics!

After carrying out the mountainous task of batting throughout the fifty overs and scoring the first ever double ton in the history one day internationals, Sachin Tendulkar has once again proved that age is nothing more than just a number. While he hit 25 fours and 3 sixes, he was also hitting away the question of his retirement … for ever! As it is, the demand for his retirement from his critics was always baseless. And on February 24, 2010, the Master Blaster proved their idiocy while batting against South Africa in Gwalior.

Since February 2009, Sachin has scored 1,158 runs in 20 one day internationals with 4 centuries at a mammoth average of 72.37 (Stats provided by The Times Of India). Apart from this, he has to his name 10 Test Match centuries since January 2008 in 23 test matches (Cricinfo stats).

Apart from scoring these huge numbers of runs, just playing in these many matches in both the forms of the game requires a unique fitness level when you are in your late 30s. That uniqueness is seen not only in the maestro’s batting but also his fielding. He plays all kind of traditional as well as cheeky shots with ease. He sprints across the boundary with the same level of energy when he was 20. So, while considering all this, why the hell should anyone think of his retirement?

Time and again Tendulkar has answered his critics by his performance and in Gwalior he provided a final slap to them. These include, Indian and international ex-players, columnists, the cricket-illiterate news reporters and anchors and some self proclaimed chaps who wrongly consider themselves pundits of cricket. However, if they still continue to wriggle their tongues, Sachin’s bat is always there to do the talking with those fools!

Sachin Tendulkar Completes 20 Years in International Cricket!

Maybe for the first time in my life I am caught in a situation where I am eager and enthusiastic to express myself but I am not able to find the words.

Well, I have no problems with this because it is the bewilderment of the Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar which is making me speechless as he completes 20 years in international cricket, 20 years of making India proud, 20 years of carrying the pressure of the whole match on his shoulders, 20 years of giving a nightmare to bowlers around the world, 20 years of being down to earth despite being the biggest cricketing hero in the world, 20 years of forcing tens of thousands of his followers to ram in the stadium just to watch him and last but not the least – 20 years of being what he is.

Sachin_century-NagpurBecause of my writer’s block right now (for which I am proud), I can just say I feel fortunate to have been born in this era as I got a chance to grow simultaneously with Sachin’s career.

If it wasn’t for Sachin’s determination and strong will, he couldn’t have completed two decades in international cricket because of the tremendous pressure laden on him to retire by some ‘so-called’ cricket experts since last 4-5 years. Well, they will still pester him to hang his boots and call it a day soon but who responds to barking dogs?

By the way, despite having a writer’s block, I still managed to write almost close to 300 words. Well, this is also because of the genius of the master!

Lastly, I am never able to keep my filmy keeda away which is forcing me to present you the Master Blaster in the following manners: –
